Oxnard School Districts needs a vision and a plan that produces outcomes.  Students are failing math and English language Arts.  We can't continue to use a plan that is not yielding results.

The School District Governing Board is required to approve the district's operating budget, along with any subsequent revisions. As board members, we have a fiscal responsibility to ensure that every dollar spent is an investment in outcomes directly linked to student success.

Teachers are the backbone of student development, and it's crucial that they are equipped with all the essential resources to nurture students to their utmost potential. I envision a collaborative governance and accountability committee where teachers, administrators, students, parents, and community stakeholders collectively devise solutions centered on student success through consensus.

Oxnard is adept at engaging parents in student activities, but there is potential to enhance this involvement further. It is vital to transcend basic engagement by actively incorporating parents into their children's education. Parental involvement should encompass cultural awareness and a linguistic perspective, recognizing the unique identities of our parents and understanding that a uniform approach does not suit everyone in parent engagement.

According to the California Dashboard and ED-Data.org, during the 2023-24 fiscal year, 12,219 students, which is 91.2%, were recipients of free or reduced lunch, or were identified as English Learners, Migrant Student Program participants, Unhoused, or in Foster care.  Oxnard School Distict can't meet the need of students on its own, therefore we must ensure we are working in partnership with County of Ventura agencies to provide families with direct access to resources, as well as our local nonprofits and grassroots organizations. Moreover, we must ensure anti-racist practices and inclusive spaces for all students, ensuring that historically marginalized students of color (Black, Indigenous, Latino), students living with a disability, students who identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, and those with intersectionality know and feel they are part of the campus community.   

Anti-racist practices are essential in fostering inclusive and equitable spaces. To achieve this, we must cultivate environments where individuals feel secure to express themselves and engage in difficult discussions about racism and discrimination. If we are committed to developing our students to their fullest potential, we must approach these challenging conversations with compassion and a holistic perspective.
